When she came out of the bathroom, Michelle went into her and Henry's room to get ready for going out. I heard her talking on the phone — presumably with Henry. It made me feel nervous. Was he still supportive? Was she talking him down from a ledge?

It was also kind of exciting to think that she was in there dolling herself up for a night out with me.

I put on a nice shirt, a decent pair of pants, but had no idea what Michelle would be wearing.

When she finally emerged, half an hour later, you could have knocked me down with a feather. She looked sensational in a thin dark blue dress that had a sheen of satin about it that made it almost look as though it was a nightie. It came down to mid-thigh, her legs bare for a warm summer evening.

Her dress was so thin I couldn’t imagine she was wearing anything underneath.

"Wow," was all I could say.

She smiled, gave me a twirl. Still no sign of underwear.

"Am I underdressed here?" I asked her, and made her laugh.

"No, you look perfect," she said, her eyes appreciating me enough to make me feel almost confident about my appearance.

She took my hand in hers as we walked up to the High Road to better our chances of getting a taxi, and perhaps because of the darkness, because of our progress, there was a new edge to the feeling of connection with her, a new wicked sense of excitement.

Confirming as it was that we were dating.

"How does it feel, taking the next step?" I asked her as we waited for a cab, another couple stealing the one we thought we might get.

"I’m a little nervous," she admitted, surprising me.

"But you’ve done this before."

"Not while I’ve been married. And not with a friend, and a friend of my husband’s at that. Are you nervous?"

"Terrified." At her double-take, I added: "In a good way."

"If there is such a thing," she laughed.

"I guess we’ve gone out together before, we just have to relax and see it like that."

It was funny to think that Henry’s long attempt at getting me comfortable with Michelle — having us all go out together, sending me out on platonic dates with her — had all been intended, potentially, to set us up for this kind of situation.

But this wasn’t the same as one of our previous dates.

She’d been flirtatious before, but now she acted in a slightly different way — turning it on to a higher degree, stepping up her femininity somehow, flashing me the kind of glances that weren’t just amused or mischievous, but outright lustful and daring.

Then there was the way she’d presented herself: before, we’d only ever gone out in casual clothes, jeans and so on. Tonight, I’d made a little more of an effort but Michelle looked dazzling.

The way she occasionally touched me, all through the evening date, in the taxi, the restaurant, the bars, the club — it wasn’t just her coquettish nature now, it seemed more like foreplay.
